Blepharoplasty is a common surgical procedure that can rejuvenate your appearance.

Some patients may be reluctant to undergo surgery, and there has been an evolution of technology termed Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty that utilises non-surgical techniques to tighten the skin around your eyelids, reducing overhang and droopiness. One of these procedures is PLASMAGE.

PLASMAGE is able to generate plasma energy through an electric discharge that starts when the accurate tip is close to the skin, but never touching it. The plasma generated by the ionisation of the gas creates a sublimation of superficial tissues thus creating a lifting effect. This process also heats the skin and creates increased collagen formation. Due to the extra collagen development, the skin contracts over time, restoring the tightness and tautness to the targeted area (above and below the eye area). The resulting tissue retraction and tightening smooths out the skin, reducing the excess skin, fine lines, wrinkles for a smoother, healthier and more youthful appearance.

What are the advantages of a PLASMAGE?

The biggest advantage of this technique is that it avoids surgery. No surgery means less risks of the procedure, less downtime, quick recovery and less costs.

  • The biggest benefit is for patients with mild to moderate skin laxity for both upper and lower eyelid.
  • The treatment is faster than surgery and can be completed in around 30-60 minutes.
  • The treatment is non invasive and non ablative, and can be performed using only topical anaesthesia.
  • The recovery is relatively fast with minor swelling and bruising that fades over 1-2 weeks.
  • Patients can resume most daily activities after 1-week.
  • The procedure can also be used to treat wrinkles, scars, moles, skin tags, lentigo, fibromas, keratosis, xanthelasma.

What are the dis-advantages of a Non-Surgical Blepharoplasty?

  • The limitation of the technique is that it is solely dependent on tightening the skin, hence other characteristics and changes with your eyelids including swelling caused by fat prolapse may not be improved by this technique.
  • The technique can lead to scarring in darker skins and is not appropriate for Fitzpatrick skin type 4 and above.
  • The long-term effects of some non-surgical blepharoplasty techniques are not known, however if scarring should happen, this may make future surgery more challenging.

Treatment appointment/s will be approximately 30-60 minutes per treatment session. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area in preparation for treatment. During the treatment you may feel a warming and stinging sensation in the treated areas. Before and after photographs will be taken of the area being treated.

How many treatments will I need?

The treatment may be completed in one session. This will depend upon a number of factors and your physician will discuss this with you although it could be up to 2-3 treatment sessions to get the desired outcome. If both upper and lower eyelids are required to be treated, it is very likely this will need to be covered over 2-3 sessions, again your physician will advise the optimum number of treatments for you.

When will I see results?

You may not see immediate results. The earliest you will see results is approximately 7 days after the treatment and the treated areas will continue to improve for 3 months following your PLASMAGE treatment.

How long will they last?

The results will last up to 2 years. After this period PLASMAGE treatment can simply be repeated if desired.

You will need to keep the treated area clean. You will be recommended an aftercare programme to be followed for approximately 7 -10 days. The aftercare programme is very important to promote healing and optimise your treatment results. You will also need to protect your eye area from sun exposure until all of the redness has settled down post your treatment. Your physician will take you through this in detail.

Post Treatment

The majority of patients can carry on their normal daily activities directly following the procedure. Although there can be minor discomfort for up to 7 days along with brown marks that have the appearance of scabbing, after around 5 days these will fall off revealing new skin beneath, some swelling may also be seen. A follow up appointment will also be booked approximately 1-2 weeks following the procedure.

Is it painful?

Because anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated, the prick from the needle is minimal, with only a brief tingly sensation. Recovery is entirely pain-free. Swelling may occur on the treated area but will disappear in 2-3 days.
